Analysis of Opening Titles

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Even though this is not a movie but a TV programme I have been inspired by it and intend to use some features in my production. Immediately when the sequence starts your attention gets brought to the Title of the programme, it links to its initial genre of horror as the white in the titles make it stand out from the dark scene behind it therefore making the audience aware of the darkness in the programme. The font is fairly simple however the word 'Buffy' looks as if hand written which I think looks effective and I want to use this technique for my production to give the impression my antagonist has written or even scratched out the titles himself.

The titles throughout are still in the colour white to stand out from the background however they are not big enough to draw attention from the footage in the background which I also think is effective as it keeps the audience more intrigued in what is going on behind as well as showing who is in it. These titles that show the characters also have a transition from  fading and gliding from the previous to the new whilst matching the character in it.

The only thing I dislike about these titles are where they are placed on the screen as they are in the middle bottom throughout which I don't think is very creative and could be considered boring in a movie opening especially a horror as you need to cause the audience confusion which could be done through the use of titles. From this opening I intend to take the colour white font to compare with my dark background in my production and also the different letter font sizes and how they are not seen to be made by the computer yet hand drawn.

The Ring

In the opening titles of ring you get a loss of security as immediately the credits begin to flicker and jump slightly from the position they were initially in, this flickering makes the audience confused and I think is really imaginative and fits in perfectly with the genre as it creates tension and an eerie atmosphere. I really want to use this technique as I think it would fit great with my production as it causes confusion for my target audience and also represents the confusion in the antagonists head. Also if the word as an 'O' in it this would fade slower than the other letters representing the ring making the audience wonder why this is happening and what is so important about the 'ring'.

The titles also jump from suggesting they are at the front of the screen then jumping to the back of it again causing the audience to feel on edge as this could suggest the film is also jumpy and erratic.
Again like Buffy the colour is white so I definitely want to use the colour white as it contrasts with the black background. I think I will also use similar font as they are all different sizes which I think is really effective for a horror genre. Like the ring I intend to put my titles on a black background cutting into footage to create and creepy atmosphere i will do this in irregular time patterns also to create confusion.
