Evaluation of my initial opening scene

Evaluation of my initial opening scene

First of watching my opening scene I knew much more footage was needed using different camera shots as there was little diversity throughout. I and my group have now filmed more footage and creating our second draft. I also need to add titles which I have been researching to find inspiration and the perfect titles to go with my film. I would like to change the transitions between shots as they jump and don’t look effective and some don’t match the genre. However I do think it looks very much like a horror film and build tension. I would like to watch this film as I would like to know this character is in the film as he is covered which I also think is successful.

Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback

I created questions to ask my audience that also watch the first initial opening scene. I first asked where they though the titles should go initially they said over the top but as we continued discussing we thought that it would be too much writing on the screen as there are newspaper articles in it so the resolution to this was to put the titles in-between shots on a background. A second question was do you like the transitions of shots. This was clear that the audience didn’t as they thought they didn’t fit the genre. My final question was do they understand the plot and what is suggested to happen. The audience said it was understandable that he was a murder and therefore other murders would take place in the film. Other comments were that they liked the music and it fitted the genre and it also created and emotion of confusion and tension, perfect for a horror! To improve they said we need to vary our camera angles and shot variation.

Sketched titles

This is a rough sketch of my idea for the titles that will be featured during the opening scene of my film. The thought is to have the font in the colour white and look as if it has been worn or scratched out therefore having each letter a different size. These titles will be on a black background also making it look scratched out from this background, making them really stand out for the audience. I want the transition of my titles to flicker between shots of my filming and jump similar to 'The Ring' opening titles. I want to cause an emotion of uncertainty for the audience and make them feel on edge because of these jumpy titles which will then fit in with the genre of horror!

Analysis of Opening Titles

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Even though this is not a movie but a TV programme I have been inspired by it and intend to use some features in my production. Immediately when the sequence starts your attention gets brought to the Title of the programme, it links to its initial genre of horror as the white in the titles make it stand out from the dark scene behind it therefore making the audience aware of the darkness in the programme. The font is fairly simple however the word 'Buffy' looks as if hand written which I think looks effective and I want to use this technique for my production to give the impression my antagonist has written or even scratched out the titles himself.

The titles throughout are still in the colour white to stand out from the background however they are not big enough to draw attention from the footage in the background which I also think is effective as it keeps the audience more intrigued in what is going on behind as well as showing who is in it. These titles that show the characters also have a transition from  fading and gliding from the previous to the new whilst matching the character in it.

The only thing I dislike about these titles are where they are placed on the screen as they are in the middle bottom throughout which I don't think is very creative and could be considered boring in a movie opening especially a horror as you need to cause the audience confusion which could be done through the use of titles. From this opening I intend to take the colour white font to compare with my dark background in my production and also the different letter font sizes and how they are not seen to be made by the computer yet hand drawn.
